The designer should be the person who presents you with ideas you have never encountered before, not ideas you are used to. Beate Karlsson offers us designs we are not accustomed to and practices therapy to "make peace with our flaws".
Clothes are our second skin to the outside world. With this cover, we carry a kind of message concern. We want to hide our flaws and highlight our attractive places. The fashion design understanding of the past century has been shaped in this direction. I'm talking about thinner, sexier-looking clothes. New world aesthetics is a world that is at peace with its flaws.
The designer should be the person who presents you with ideas you have never encountered before, not ideas you are used to. His/her education and philosophy of life should support this. The designer should not be the person who receives and interprets the accepted and rising values and trends, but the person who creates those trends, reveals the values and sets the standards.
Recently, I have been watching a creative director carefully. I admire how the fashion world is able to stand out with the innovations it offers in an increasingly cartelized environment under the management of giant brands. I examine one by one how she can do this with mastery, satire and innovative materials.
I decided to share this name with you, which brings the clichés of the fashion world to their knees.
Beate Karlsson is a 27-year-old Swedish designer. She goes to New York at the age of 19 after she studied music and art in Stockholm, where she takes courses in fashion.
Karlsson's interest in and practice with materials such as mud and silicone is very decisive in the design line that has made her a popular name today. Karlsson's designs are playful, fantastic and quite interesting. It is possible to see the primitive and imperfect surfaces of hand shaped mud or all the contradictions technically allowed by silicone in these designs.
IMPORTANCE OF INTERNSHIPS
I first heard the designer's name with the wearable Kim Kardashian Butt she presented with the artist duo Ida-Simon. Beate talks about discovering clearly what she wants to do in her life while she was doing internships at brands like Vera Wang and Karl Lagerfeld at the age of 22. I always emphasize that internships are as important as school years in people's lives.
Perhaps Karlsson's internship with fashion giants helped her find the sarcastic, humorous yet original and groundbreaking style she is today.
The designer has been the creative director of the Florentine brand Avavav since last year. The shoe series named Finger Feet attracts a lot of attention. She features her designs both on social media and in publications such as Dazed, ID, Paper Mag.
CHANGING BODY AESTHETICS AND FASHION
A fashion designer becomes original when she/he can change his/her body silhouette. The classical aesthetic understanding handles this change in the direction of perfection. Karlsson changes the silhouette of the body with a similar understanding. In doing so, it distorts the proportions of the existing body, lengthens it, and pulls it. It presents an unfamiliar body cover with its colors and distribution.
These designs, which basically blend latex and fabric materials, suggest a colorful dream and a happy fantasy world. On the other hand, the perception of the emerging ones does not shy away from iconic concepts such as rave and eroticism.
The Swedish designer is also closely involved with the transformation. For Avavav, for which she is the creative director, she uses materials that are leftovers from famous brands. This is a new and creative perspective for transformation. Instead of 20% wool and 80% polyester, a mixture such as 20% Fendi and 30% Burberry is presented on the label of a garment you buy from this brand. In a way, Beate adopts the philosophy that turns trash into treasure.
The designer's different perspective is also revealed with the catwalk show she presents these days, when the new season's fashion shows appear every day. Each of Avavav's models presents their clothes in slow motion with a beautiful fall while walking gracefully. In my opinion, very poetic shots, just as different.
The designs, shaped by the designer's passion for mud material, finally took their place in the meta-realm.
The virtual fashion week, which was held for the first time last February, took place simultaneously with Paris Fashion Week. Presenting a special collection for this virtual fashion week organized by the Metaverse platform Decentraland, Avavav featured the designer's very contradictory shoes and designs. With this collection, Karlsson does the meta world justice and mentions that the digital environment is a unique opportunity for creations that are not possible in real life. A designer who doesn't want to repeat himself would want just that.
