The person who met his doctor father, Isaac Carasso, in Thessaloniki and transformed the yogurt he used as a medicine into the 'Danone' brand by giving his own name: Daniel Carasso.
Born in Thessaloniki in 1905, Daniel Carasso laid the foundations of a food giant like Danone, thanks to the yogurt his father, a doctor, used as medicine.
Yoghurt from Thessaloniki
The story of Danone is based on the Carasso Family, who immigrated to Spain from Thessaloniki in 1912. During the Balkan Wars, Thessaloniki thought, Izak Karasu, a doctor, immigrated to Spain with his wife and son. Returning to the lands they left after 420 years, the Karasu Family settled in Barcelona. Izak Karasu changed his name to 'Isaac' and his surname to 'Carasso'.
Used as medicine
Isaac Carasso started working by opening a practice. Isaac Carosso, who was looking for a cure for children who died of intestinal infections during the First World War, remembered the yogurt he had met in Thessaloniki as a child. Isaac Carosso, who made the basement of his house as a dairy, developed yogurt as a medicine and sold it in pharmacies in 1919. Isaac Carasso, who wanted to give the brand the name 'Danon', the Catalan equivalent of his son's 'Daniel' name, added the letter 'E' to the end as the 'Danon' brand was registered at that time, and thus the world-famous Danone brand was born.
He listened to his father
Daniel Carasso, son of Isaac Carosso and Honorary President of Danone, was born in Thessaloniki in 1905. Daniel Carasso, who went to Spain with his family, moved to Marseille for the University in 1923. He continued to the Pasteur Institute after his father wanted him to be more educated in the field of bacteriology. Daniel Carasso, who came to Paris in 1929, moved the yogurt business, which his father had laid the foundation, to France. In a shop in the 18th district in Paris, "Danone Yogurts Paris Company" opened its doors. The first factory followed in 1932 in Levallois-Perret.
USA's first company
Daniel Carasso, who immigrated to the USA in 1942 after the outbreak of the Second World War, introduced this country to yogurt. Daniel Carasso founded the USA's first yogurt company in New York. The name of the company became 'Dannon Yogurt Products'. Daniel Carasso returned to Europe in 1951 after the war. Especially between 1950-1967, Danone company grew very fast and became one of the most well-known food brands in the world. The company, which merged with Gervais in 1967 and became Gervais-Danone, decided to continue with the BSN Group of the USA in 1972.
