He attracted attention by breaking the 25-year world record held by famous athlete Jesse Owens in 1960 by eight inches (8.21 m). This record was first 8.24 meters, then 8.28 meters. In 1964, he renewed his records with a time of 8.31 m and then 8.34 m. In 1965, he set the long jump world record to 8.35 m. He participated in the Olympic games three times. He also won the bronze medal in 1968. He quit athletics at the age of twenty-eight.
Ralph Harold Boston (born May 9, 1939) is a retired American track athlete who received three Olympic medals and became the first person to break the 27 feet (8.2 m) barrier in the long jump.
