Their music forces people to concentrate: Who does Dream Theater consist of?

In group music; While combining progressive rock and heavy metal with the foundations of jazz, it also manages to influence the music of many bands by opening a new path in progressive metal with lyrics influenced by deep topics such as life and philosophy.

Falling through pages of Martens on angels

Feeling my heart pull west

I saw the future dressed as a stranger

Love in a space-dye vest

One day I heard a song that started with the lyrics and I was struck in the heart. I felt like my heart was being pulled in completely different directions. It was an extraordinary Dream Theater piece that had one of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard and gave me goosebumps.

Space-Dye Vest is the story of Kevin Moore, the band's legendary keyboardist, who, shortly after being abandoned by his girlfriend, falls obsessively in love with a model he saw in a clothing catalog wearing an outfit called "space-dye vest"*.

He constantly questions this to himself, and as he continues to question, he discovers the reason: He was abandoned before he could give everything he was ready to give to his lover in his relationship, and he started to throw away everything he couldn't give. “Space-Dye Vest” is the product of this awakening.

The purpose of some people's birth is definitely to make music. Their brains work so differently that the music they create has mathematics and codes, and you almost have to be a good musician to understand it. This part of the job is technical and is a matter completely independent of mood. Dream Theater has successfully been a progressive metal band consisting of a top-notch think tank known as Genius for 30 years.

Founded in 1985 by bass guitarist John Myung, guitarist John Petrucci, and drummer Mike Portnoy, who studied at Berklee, the band later took the name "Majesty" with the participation of Petrucci's childhood friend Kevin Moore.

After their first album was successful, they learned that the name "Majesty" was used by another band and changed their name to "Dream Theater" for the first and last time, inspired by an old cinema. After releasing their first album When Dream and Day Unite in 1989, vocalist Charlie Dominici left the band due to musical differences, and Canadian James LaBrie joined the band instead.

Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed in 1985 in Boston, Massachusetts. The band comprises John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass), Mike Portnoy (drums), James LaBrie (vocals) and Jordan Rudess (keyboards).

While Dream Theater made their biggest breakthrough in 1992 with their second album Images and Words, they also held their first concert with the contribution of Iron Maiden. Legendary name Kevin Moore leaves the band, which released the album Awake in 1994 and is replaced by Derek Sherinian. They became one of the leading bands of the progressive metal movement that started in America in the early 1990s. The number of people around the world who call the band "one of the best bands of all time", which stands out among its peers with the music they produce, the lyrics they write, and the talents of the band members in their own fields, is quite high. In group music; While combining progressive rock and heavy metal with the foundations of jazz, it also manages to influence the music of many bands by opening a new path in progressive metal with lyrics influenced by deep topics such as life and philosophy.

The music performed by the band, which became known as the greatest progressive rock band of all time after Pink Floyd with the albums A Change Of Seasons in 1995 and Falling From Infinity in 1997, is very difficult to play, with its clunky rhythms and deep elements both technically and emotionally. It has been one of the most discussed topics among genre lovers for years. While Kevin Moore's departure deeply affected the band's fans and many of them stopped listening to Dream Theater, the band filled the void left by Moore with Jordan Rudess. While Rudess adapted in a short time and gained great respect with his talent and technical skills, the concept album they released in 1999, titled Scenes From A Memory, with the sub-title of Metropolis Part 2, created a bombshell in the rock music world. In this album, a man named Nicholas is brought back to his past life by hypnosis and he sees that in his past life, there was a woman named Victoria and the problems that occurred as a result of two brothers falling in love with her (The beginning of this story is also told as Metropolis Part 1 in the Images and Words album). The album creates the impression that the listener is watching a feature-length film, bringing about profound differences and expansions in the musicality of many people, including me. While sequential rhythms, irregular melodies, and the sudden appearance of a general rhythm in various places trigger addiction to this band over time, some albums cause mental loss.

The band, which made more experimental albums in the future, released the album Train Of Thought, the hardest album of their career, in 2003, after a 2-CD album called 6 Degrees Of Inner Turbulence in 2002. This was followed by Octavarium in 2005, and John Petrucci, who is known as one of the most genius, fastest, and most creative guitarists in the rock world, stated that he considered this album to be their best album. Their next album, Systematic Chaos, was released in the summer of 2007, and "Constant Motion" and "Dark Eternal Night" were among the best metal riffs of the last decade. The Greatest Hits album, which was released in April 2008 by going into the studio and re-covering the band's old songs, which is like a best of album, consists of two parts, the "dark" and the "light" side. In 2009, the band's last album, Black Clouds and Silver Linings, was released, and produced with Mike Portnoy, who won many awards for his outstanding talent and technical skills. According to Mike Portnoy, the album deals with many dark themes in a harsh style, but in addition to this dark and heavy atmosphere, it also draws an optimistic line both thematically and musically.

The departure of superhuman drummer Mike Portnoy, who did not miss a beat while throwing 30 drumsticks to the audience and twirling them with his fingers while throwing them into the air, brought with it many discussions and divisions. According to some, the biggest reason for the decline of the group was Portnoy and it was a good thing that he left the group. For some, Dream Theater without Mike Portnoy is unthinkable and the band will inevitably end its musical life. While at the center of all these discussions, in April 2011, Dream Theater published a video on YouTube summarizing the band's search for a new drummer after the departure of Mike Portnoy. At the end of the search process, Mike Mangini begins playing as the band's new drummer. The band released a new album called A Dramatic Turn of Events on September 12, 2011. The band, which was nominated for a Grammy for the first time with the song "On The Backs Of Angels" from this album, released their self-titled album Dream Theater in 2013 and received a Grammy nomination once again with the song "The Enemy Inside" from the album. The band's album The Astonishing, released in 2016, is again in the concept album format and is based on a story with fantastic elements. Although Dream Theater's last album, Distance Over Time, released in 2019, did not have the effect of Images and Words, Awake, or Scenes From A Memory on its fans, it makes one say that the Mancini and Petrucci duo did a good job.

Dream Theater makes music that appeals to people who have reached a certain level of ear satisfaction, with many of their fans; They are a band that pushes people to concentrate while listening to music, and enables people to discover something new in the songs every time they listen to them, improves their perception of music, and creates a beautiful balance by making music in a progressive rock style while also appealing to emotions. Therefore, it deserves the praise that "every album, every song should be listened to".
