Afghan politician, economist, and anthropologist who served as the 5th president of Afghanistan and the 2nd and last president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. His government was overthrown by the Taliban.

After completing his primary and secondary education in Kabul, he studied economics and anthropology at the American University of Beirut and Colombia University. He worked with the World Bank before returning to Afghanistan in 2002.
He served as Afghanistan's finance minister between July 2002 and December 2004. He previously served as rector of Kabul University. He worked to strengthen Afghanistan economically after the collapse of the Taliban government.
In a survey conducted by Foreign Policy Magazine in 2013, he ranked second among the world's top 100 intellectuals.
