Edwin Hubble is the Astronomer who found that the Universe is expanding.
Edwin Hubble was born on November 20, 1889, in Marshfield, Missouri, USA. His mother is Virginia Lee James and his father is John Powell Hubble. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1910 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Then he went to England, where he went on a scholarship, this time at Oxford University, where he studied law. He graduated from Law in 1912. Upon his return, he opened a law firm in Louisville, Kentucky, where he worked as a lawyer until 1914. He was interested in boxing and athletics during his university years. In 1914, he was taken to the war and sent to France. Returning from the war, he started working at the Mount Wilson Observatory in 1919. He worked at the Mount Wilson Observatory for the remainder of his life. Apart from his military service during World War II, he devoted his whole life to astronomy after that date.
He tried to unravel the mysteries of the universe with his observations, which he continued until the end of his life, at this observatory, which was established with the initiative and effort of Hale, near Pasadena, California. Hubble, After World War II, also assumed the chair of the research committee of Palomar observatories and was instrumental in the realization of large-scale research programs. At the time, most astronomers thought that the entire universe consisted of our galaxy, the Milky Way. But Hubble spotted some stars at the tip of the Andromeda Galaxy and speculated that they were far beyond the Milky Way. He proved that the Andromeda Galaxy is another galaxy, so there are other galaxies besides our own. In 1924, he proved that other galaxies are composed of millions of stars like the galaxy in which the earth is located (the Milky Way), and he measured the distances between galaxies. He made the first galaxy classification in 1925.
In 1929, he explained the speed of galaxies with Milton La Salle Humason, revealing the famous Hubble-Humason Law. He put forward the theory that the universe is expanding. Hubble is also one of the biggest proponents of the Big bang theory. Because he found that the stars and planets were moving away from the earth thanks to the light spectrum. He later found that all the planets were moving away from each other. This meant that the universe was expanding. In fact, Albert Einstein theoretically proved that the universe cannot be static. And if we consider the universe as a balloon and the points on it as planets, the planets will move away from each other as the balloon inflates. Based on this, if we release the gas of the balloon, that is, turn back time, the planets would approach each other and form 0 (zero) volume and infinite density. He predicted that at the beginning of the universe, it would be with Bigbang, a big bang. Hubble also studied the light spectrum. He realized that for a redshift to occur, the stars had to move away from us. He noticed the increase in redshift as galaxies weakened. A giant telescope bearing his name was launched into space in 1990. Edwin Hubble married Grace Burke on February 26, 1924. Hubble died in the USA on September 28, 1953.
