His girlfriend, Delore Stougje, watched the accident on her television and thought Fabio was dead. After monitoring his health in a panic and learning that he was in a coma, he began to worry that he would never be able to ride a bike again, even if he lived.

In 2021, he dedicated his first-place finish in the fourth stage of Molina de Aragon to the healthcare workers who resurrected him.

He is still angry with Dylan Groenewegen, the Jumbo-Visma racer who caused the accident. (He crashes his bike in front of Fabio at the very beginning of the race.) He was expecting an apology, not just individually but publicly. After such a trauma, Fabio's expectations are natural.
Jakobsen, who found himself on the list of potential cyclists in 2021, has the first places in Europetropole, Gooksie Pijl, as well as Tour de Wallonie (2nd Stage), Vuelta a Espana (3rd Stage). As of 2021, he was ranked 62nd in the world rankings.
Jakobsen returned to professional racing on April 11, 2021, at the Presidential Tour of Türkiye.
He participated in the 2021 Vuelta a España, where he won the Vuelta a España points class, including three stages in total.
He managed to win the 2022 Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne in the mass sprint finish.

The first stage of the 59th Türkiye Cycling Tour, held in Antalya this year, has been completed. The winner of the first stage of the tour, which will be completed in Istanbul, was Dutch athlete Fabio Jakobsen.
25 teams and 175 cyclists from 14 countries will pedal for 8 days in an organization of approximately 2 thousand people. Competitors started to compete fiercely and sweat to come first on the 1188-kilometer track.
