In the years he started architecture, two views were dominant in architecture: Who is Gordon Bunshaft?

Lever House Office Building, which he built in New York in 1952, is one of the most important of the exterior skyscrapers.

US architect. He made a name for himself with his design works at Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, which are the leading architectural offices of his country. He was born on May 9, 1909, in Buffalo, New York. He studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. He went to Europe and North Africa with a scholarship he won. In 1937, he entered S.O.M. (Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill), one of the largest architecture firms in the USA. He became a partner and responsible architect here in 1946. He carried out the construction works of this company in and outside the USA.

Gordon Bunshaft (May 9th, 1909 - August 6th, 1990) was an eminent modernist American architect. For his achievements in architecture, he was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1988.

In the years when Bunshaft started architecture, two views were dominant in architecture. One of them was the understanding of simple form, which was created by the rationality arising from the combination of economic, technical, and aesthetic elements. The second view argued that parts with different functions and structures in a building should be separated from each other.

Bunshaft's most important works are S.O.M. While working with the firm, he was influenced by both views. Lever House Office Building, which he built in New York in 1952, is one of the most important of the exterior skyscrapers. Bunshaft took Mies van der Rohe, one of the leading architects of that period, as an example in the design of this building. In 1957, in Bloomfield, Connecticut General Life Insurance Headquarters was made with a similar approach, and took care to create open office spaces in the plans. In Yale University's Library of Valuable Books and Manuscripts, Bunsbaft appears to be turning to a new understanding. In this first building of his last period, Bunshaft used the structural elements on the exterior of the building as an impressive form element. The most important building of Bunshaft during this period is the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Research Center of the University of Texas. Horizontal lines are emphasized in this structure made of travertine. Bunshaft has also been built outside his country. Among these are the Lambert Bank in Brussels and the Istanbul Hilton Hotel, whose design was also participated by Sedat Hakkı Eldem.
