He was a member of The New York Five and the Memphis Group – and a professor of architecture at Princeton University for nearly forty years. Following his own partial paralysis in 2003, Graves became an internationally recognized advocate of health care design.
Michael Graves was born and raised in Indiana, where he was educated at Broad Ripple High and received his diploma in 1952. Graves earned his master's degree from Harvard University, won the Rome Prize in 1960, and spent the next two years at the American Academy in Rome. He designed structures such as the Portlan Building and the Denver Public Library. He undertook the architecture of the hotel and many buildings in Walt Disney World. He made his name written in the New York Quintet, which includes the words of famous architects such as Peter Eisenman and John Hejduk.
