Valeriy Nikolayevich Brumel (14 April 1942 – 26 January 2003) was a Russian high jumper. The 1964 Olympic champion and multiple world record holder, he is regarded as one of the greatest athletes ever to compete in the high jump. His international career was ended by a motorcycle crash in 1965.

He set 6 consecutive world records in the high jump between 1961 and 1963.

He started his record with 2.23 cm and increased it to 2.28 cm.

He won the gold medal with a time of 2.18 m in Tokyo in 1964.

At the age of 24, he quit athletics after being severely injured in a car accident in Moscow.

Brumel died at the age of only 60 in 2003.
