The founding stories of two giant companies: Are you a Marvel or a DC Comics person?

These two companies, which are the most important representatives of the comic book industry, have been continuing their existence for many years and carry the concept of superheroism to the future.

In 1939, Timely Comics aired its first superhero series, Namor. The peculiarity of Namor is that he came from Atlantis, which was submerged in mythology, and he hated people. In a sense, Namor is the first anti-hero in comic book history. The attack that started with Namor continues with Human-Torch.

DC Comics, owned by Warner Bros., was founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1934 as National Allied Publications before taking this name. The company, which has changed its name many times over the years, has continued its existence as DC Comics since 1977. Marvel was founded in 1939 under the name Timely Comics. The company, which was renamed Marvel in 1961, was sold to The Walt Disney Company in 2009.

There is a rivalry created by fans between Marvel and DC, which has recently started to show themselves on the big screen. In fact, the similarities of the characters to each other intensify the competition between the companies. But when you look at it, the aim of both companies is to produce and publish comics. For this reason, it is quite normal for them to be influenced by each other. However, there are many differences between these two companies, whose goals are the same.

The first of these differences is undoubtedly the characters. Although they have similar characters, there are big differences between the heroes in general. DC's characters are more godlike than Marvel's. Having divine and mythological characters such as Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, DC also has highly durable and intelligent superhumans such as Green Lantern and Batman. Marvel's characters, on the other hand, have more usual features than DC. Characters such as Spider-Man or Hulk become superheroes by gaining superior abilities as a result of accidents. This makes Marvel more realistic than DC. DC's philosophy is to create legendary characters that people can take as role models. Marvel's philosophy is to show that superheroes can emerge from among ordinary people.

Another difference is the places where the stories take place. The places DC Comics uses in its stories are imaginary places formed by the combination of many real cities. For example, Gotham, the city of Batman; It is a region created by combining cities such as New York, Chicago and Pittsburg. Marvel's stories take place in real places. Hell's Kitchen, Daredevil's neighborhood, is located in Manhattan. In addition, DC uses mythological and legendary places within these imaginary places. Like Atlantis, where Aquaman is its king. Another important feature of DC is that the characters are the guardians of the created imaginary places. Superman is the guardian of Metropolis, Batman of Gotham and Flash Central City. On the other hand, we can say that DC puts the concept of space in the foreground more than Marvel. Green Lantern stories are mostly set in space, Superman and Martian Manhunter are aliens, for example. Marvel's stories mostly take place on Earth.

What powers superheroes have is as important as how they gain these powers. Most heroes in DC have innate special powers. Examples of these heroes are Superman, Supergirl and Wonder Woman. However, some heroes also gain extraordinary abilities as a result of their accidents (Flash and Green Lantern). In Marvel, on the other hand, the number of heroes who gain superpowers by accident is more dominant. Like Peter Parker, who gets special powers as a result of a spider bite, or Bruce Banner, who turns into a green giant as a result of a radioactive accident... On the other hand, Marvel also has characters with innate special powers. For example; The thunder god Thor is a much-loved character in the Marvel universe with innate powers.

The results that the acquired special powers bring to the heroes are also different for these two companies. Even though Marvel's characters turn into superheroes thanks to their powers, they pay the price. Just like Peter Parker, who lost his uncle Ben, and Ben Grimm, who now appears as a rock man, or the X-Men, who suffer racism for being different from humans because of their powers. In DC, on the other hand, special powers are often seen as a blessing for the characters. The most important reason for this is the way the characters obtain their powers.

Similar to Marvel's hero communities like X-Men, Avengers, Inhumans, DC has some communities like Doom Patrol, Justice League and Teen Titans. Moreover, these communities often work together when there is a problem. There are heroes who put their heads together and overcome the problem, as well as some villains in the DC universe, trying to realize their evil plans as a team. An example of this is the collective evils of Batman's enemies, such as the Joker, Riddler, Two Face and Penguin. Unlike DC, these communities do not form much unity in Marvel. For example; We don't see much of the X-Men around when the Avengers team is dealing with a problem.

These two companies in the comics industry have started to show themselves on the big screen in recent years. There are also differences in terms of general themes between the cinematic universes they create and the films made by Marvel and DC, which reach their fans through cinema. DC movies contain little humor and are often set on a dark theme. Marvel's movies, on the other hand, have a more colorful theme and contain more humor than DC's. The broadcasting rights of the characters used by Marvel in movies or TV series are also reserved for different companies. The broadcast rights to X-Men and Fantastic Four are held by Fox. The rights to Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are shared between Marvel and Fox. For this reason, we see two different actors portraying Quicksilver in the Avengers and X-Men movies. In DC, the rights of all characters belong to DC and Warner Bros.

It is debated which of these two companies, which are the pioneers of comics, is the best. But it is a fact that Marvel and DC will continue to glorify the concept of superheroism in cinemas as well as in comics.

In what order will Marvel movies and TV series be watched in 2022?

As you know, Disney established a cinematic universe for Marvel called the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and several different Marvel movies are included in the series every year. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), many characters have their own special series besides solo films. In particular, many Marvel fans are wondering the answer to the question "Which Marvel movie should be watched first".
