From the Secretary General of NATO to the Presidency of the Central Bank; Who is Jens Stoltenberg?
The search for a candidate for the NATO Secretary General, which will be vacated due to Jens Stoltenberg's appointment as the Chairman of the Central Bank of Norway, has begun.
Stoltenberg's tenure as NATO Secretary General expires in September, and he will become Governor of the Bank of Norway after that date.
Jens Stoltenberg was born on March 16, 1959 in Oslo, Norway. His mother is Karin Stoltenberg and his father is Thorvald Stoltenberg. He has two sisters named Nini and Camilla. He spent some of his childhood there when his father served as the Yugoslav ambassador in 1960-1963. After Oslo Waldorf elementary school, he finished high school at Oslo Cathedral School. After graduating from high school, he did his military service. He graduated from Oslo University in 1987 with a degree in economics.
Between 1990 and 1991, he worked as Secretary of State at the Ministry of Environment. He was elected as a member of parliament for the first time in 1993. He served as Minister of Commerce and Energy between 1993-1996, and as Minister of Finance between 1996-1997. While in opposition in Parliament, he served on standing committees on energy issues.
He served as the second minister between March 3, 2000 - October 19, 2001 and October 17, 2005 - October 16.
From 2002 to October 1, 2014, he served as the Chairman of the Norwegian Workers' Party. He was chairman of the Stoltenberg Workers' Youth League from 1985 to 1989 and served in the Oslo branch of the Workers' Party from 1990 to 1992. Between 1990 and 1991, he worked as Secretary of State at the Ministry of Environment. Jens Stoltenberg was appointed Prime Minister of Norway on March 3, 2000, although he was the party's deputy leader. He was elected Prime Minister on 17 October 2005 and for the second time in 2009. He failed to win the 2013 elections.
Jens Stoltenberg married Ingrid Schulerud in 1987. Anne Catharina (1992) Stoltenberg has two children named Axel Stoltenberg (1989).
Jens Stoltenberg, who was elected to replace Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who started his duty as Nato Secretary General in 2009, took office as NATO Secretary General on 1 October 2014.
September 2022 note
Jens Stoltenberg, former Prime Minister of Norway, has served as NATO Secretary General since 1 October 2014. However, due to his appointment as the Governor of the Central Bank of Norway, he decided to leave his post.
Stoltenberg is expected to remain at NATO headquarters in Brussels until September. Starting from 2023, a new name will take the seat vacated by Stoltenberg.
