Maybelline's story: Is it love that creates mascara?

Eugene Rimmel, the owner of the House of Rimmel, is the name of mascara. What the French call rimmel after the brand name is commonly called mascara in English.

The birth of the mascara we understand and use today dates back to 1913 and Tom Lyle Williams. According to one story, the creation of mascara is tied to a romantic love story. Williams' sister Mabel's boyfriend fell in love with another girl; That's what the rumors were. As a good brother, Williams prepared a mixture of charcoal powder and petroleum jelly for his sister Mabel and asked him to apply it to his eyelashes. This method was so effective that her sister Mabel and her boyfriend got married a year later. And then: Williams combined the words Mabel and Vaseline to form MABELLINE in 1915!

According to another story, Williams' sister Mabel burned her eyebrows and eyelashes. She used to mix ash and petroleum jelly and apply it to her eyelashes to make them grow back and give them a black color. Williams liked the idea and had a chemist formulate it. The company MABELLINE emerged. In both stories, it is a woman who created the mascara we use today.

A more formal version of the story

In the 1910s, Mabel Williams, who lived in New York, used to mix charcoal and vaseline with a brush to make her eyelashes more prominent. Mabel Williams' chemist brother must have seen the light in this mixture, as he arranged the contents in a laboratory environment and packaged them ready for sale. Maybelline, which still produces a wide variety of mascaras today, is named after its creator, Mabel, and Vaseline, which was used in the first amateur mascara.
