(1768-1844) French statesman. He was king of Naples and Spain during the reign of Napoleon I. He was born on January 7, 1768, in Corte, Corsica, and died on July 28, 1844, in Florence. He studied at Autun College in France. He began practicing law in Corsica in 1788. When the Corsicans revolted against France under Paoli's leadership, he was forced to leave Corsica.

Joseph-Napoléon Bonaparte (7 January 1768 – 28 July 1844) was a French statesman, lawyer, diplomat and older brother of Napoleon Bonaparte. During the Napoleonic Wars, the latter made him King of Naples (1806–1808), and then King of Spain (1808–1813). After the fall of Napoleon, Joseph styled himself Comte de Survilliers and emigrated to the United States, where he settled near Bordentown, New Jersey, on an estate overlooking the Delaware River not far from Philadelphia.

In 1794 he married Julie Clary, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, in Marseille. In 1796, he was appointed as a Corsican deputy in the Assembly of Five Hundreds. He later resigned. Joseph Bonaparte, who was sent to Corsica on a special mission in 1796 with the support of his brother Napoleon, became the French ambassador to Parma and later to Rome in 1797.

Joseph Bonaparte, who contributed to the preparation of the coup d'état of Napoleon on November 9, 1799, signed the Luneville peace treaties with Austria in 1801 and the Amiens peace treaties with England in 1802, after participating in the negotiations as the authorized representative. In 1801, he became one of Napoleon's two advisors in the treaty between France and the Papacy.

After Napoleon's proclamation of the Empire, Joseph Bonaparte, who was considered the heir to the throne, was made king of Naples in 1806 and of Spain in 1808 by Napoleon. Joseph Bonaparte, who returned to his country during the occupation of France by the Allies, was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the troops in Paris with the title of Imperial Commander-in-Chief. He went to Switzerland in 1814 and to the USA in 1815. After staying in England between 1832-1837, he went to the USA again between 1837-1838. He spent the years 1839-1841 in England. Then he lived in Florence, Italy until his death.
