Doritos is one of the most recognized snack brands in the PepsiCo portfolio. With its intense flavor and crunch, Doritos products have been sold in more than 70 countries worldwide since their introduction in the United States in 1966.

Doritos is a brand of corn chips owned by PepsiCo's Frito-Lay company. The difference is the Doritos brand of tortilla chips and is generally popular in Mexico and Spanish-speaking countries. It was acquired by Frito-Lay in 1994. There are knurled, dry fried, spicy and taco spicy varieties, nachos cheese, and hot spice hot pepper varieties.

Arch West, a Frito-Lay executive who invented the crunchy, triangular tortilla chips known as “Doritos,” a fingertip-licking snack of choice for legions of couch-lounging football fans, highway-cruising truck drivers and munchie-craving college kids, died Sept. 20, 2011 at a hospital in Dallas. He was 97.

The origin of the name Doritos dates back to Mexico. It is a name derived from the word “Doradito” meaning small pieces of gold.

Employees of the Frito-Lay company's Casa de Fritos restaurant in Disneyland discovered Doritos in 1964 by frying tortillas and adding seasonings. There are Doritos brands in over 55 countries around the world.

In 1965, Pepsi-Cola CEO Donald Kendall and Frito-Lay CEO Herman Lay approved a merger, which they called a "model marriage," for cola to be served alongside salty snacks by a single company. Their vision gave birth to PepsiCo, which soon became one of the world's leading food and beverage companies.

Doritos is an American brand of flavored tortilla chips produced since 1964 by Frito-Lay, a wholly owned subsidiary of PepsiCo. The original Doritos were not flavored. The first flavor was Toasted Corn, released in 1966, followed by Taco in 1967 and Nacho Cheese in 1972. Other specialty flavors began to make their debut during the late 1980s. The concept for Doritos originated in a restaurant at Disneyland.

In 1932 C.E. Doolin walked into a small cafe in San Antonio and bought a bag of corn chips. Doolin learned that the corn chip maker wanted to sell his small business, so he bought the recipe and started making Fritos corn chips in his mother's kitchen. He then sold the chips in a Ford "Model T" vehicle.

That same year, Herman W. Lay started his own potato chip business in Nashville. Before long, Lay bought the manufacturer and H.W. He founded Lay & Company. The company has grown into one of the southeast's largest snack food companies. In 1961, it merged with Frito Company and became Frito-Lay, Inc. turned into a company.
