Hugo Boss was born on July 8, 1885, in Stuttgart, Germany, the youngest of five children of Heinrich Boss and Luise Münzenmayer Boss. His full name is Hugo Ferdinand Boss.

Hugo Boss started working in a weaving factory in the city of Konstanz in 1903. In 1908, he took over the underwear shop he inherited from his family in the city of Metzingen.

In 1923 he founded his own clothing company in Metzingen and started the production of shirts and jackets, sportswear and raincoats. In 1924, he founded his small firm, which bears his name and employs 30 people. He became a member of the Nazi party in 1931. He became the official supplier of licensed uniforms to Nazi party organizations. With the rise of Adolf Hitler in 1933, Boss' business began to flourish. In 1932, he took over the production of the black uniforms of the SS (Schutzstaffel) special forces, which were directly affiliated with Adolf Hitler, for the Wehrmacht, the armed forces of Nazi Germany, and the brown uniforms of the SA (Sturmabteilung) national socialists' military organization. During the Second World War, he forced some of the French and Polish POWs to work in his factory.

He was tried for his support of the Nazis after the Second World War, fined 80,000 Mark. Hugo Boss married Anna Katharina Freysinger in 1908. They have a son named Siegfried Boss.

Hugo Boss died of a dental abscess at the age of 63 on August 9, 1948, in Metzingen, Germany. Company founder Hugo Ferdinand could not see Boss becoming a world brand. His sons succeeded in bringing the company to the global market with suits in the 1960s. BOSS was registered as a trademark in 1977.

Hugo Boss is a ready-made clothing manufacturer in Germany specializing in men's and women's wear. Hugo Boss currently has at least 6100 outlets in 110 countries. Hugo Boss AG has approximately 330 retail stores with more than 1000 stores and franchise shops. 80% of Hugo BOSS suits produced in the world are produced in Turkey.

The Italian textile company Marzotto bought Hugo Boss in 1991.
