William Keith Kellogg, creator of the cereal corn flakes
Kellogg's is a US-based multinational company known for its cereal corn flakes. Who and how invented the cereal corn flakes that changed the breakfast habits of the whole world? Here is his story:
Summary: The Kellogg company was founded in 1906 in Battle Creek, Michigan, by Will Keith Kellogg. Its first name was "Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company". In 1922, the company's name was changed to "Kellogg's" after its founder.
William Keith Kellogg (WK), an American industrialist, food producer and entrepreneur who lived between 1860-1951, has been a philanthropist throughout his life, investing his income in social purposes, especially in children's education and medical needs. He did marketing in his childhood, which was spent in difficult conditions, and completed his school, which he could not finish, by going to courses. After getting married, he found a job as a hospital helper and was determined to help patients. His own family (he is the seventh child) also gave importance to healthy living, did not consume tobacco, did not consume alcohol, and did not eat meat. (His family is a member of a religious movement known as "seventh-day adventists", they believe that Jesus will come again.)
Will Kellogg, with his brother's help, embarked on an experiment with cereals in 1880 to help hospital patients heal and feed them well. As a result of their experiments on easily digestible wheat products, they found cereals in 1894. In fact, they discovered it by accident. When they forgot the cooked wheat in the open air at night, instead of sticky mass type foods, they encountered fine wheat that had dried one by one. To produce these nutrients, two brothers conducted experiments on cereals. While Kellogg undertook the sales job, he developed and renewed the additives-flavors and multiplied the product with alternatives. In 1897-1898, a standard breakfast of eggs, starch, flour soup, mashed potatoes and boiled cereal was offered, while Kellogg added his own. He roasted cornflakes and produced Corn Flakes. In 1906, with the support of his brother, he founded his own company, Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company. It changed its name to Kellog Company in 1922.
The Kellogg Company competed with a large number of grain companies at the time, but succeeded in popularizing its cereals to the public. Kellogg products, which were adopted by the public with their healthy breakfast item, carried out their advertising campaigns without stopping and became synonymous with the food item by printing their signature on the boxes. At first, with sales exceeding one million a year, it also increased the advertisements and opened branches in other countries. William Keith Kellogg has spent most of his fortune on charity. Later, he also introduced whole grain cereals and rice cereals to the market, and now it has become an indispensable food for breakfast. He devoted the rest of his life to the Kellog Foundation and died of heart failure at the age of 91.
