America's anti-war socialist senator: Who is Bernie Sanders?
In the campaigns for the presidential elections held on November 8, 2020 in the United States (USA), Democratic candidate candidate Bernie Sanders, who defined himself as a "democratic socialist", was one of the names on the agenda of the country.
Bernie Sanders was one of the strongest presidential candidates in the electoral race in the eyes of many Americans. Vermont Senator Sanders, who managed to draw a strong profile in the election race, was also the only Jewish presidential candidate.
SANDERS' YOUTH, EDUCATION AND FAMILY
Bernie Sanders was born on September 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, to Eli Sanders and Dorothy Glassberg. It is known that the family of his Polish immigrant Jewish father was killed by the Nazis in the Holocaust. Sanders, who lost first his mother and soon after his father when he was just in his 20s, graduated from the University of Chicago. After graduating, he settled in Vermont in 1968 and started working as a carpenter. In addition to his carpentry profession, he began to shoot various documentaries, publish articles and take an active role in non-governmental organizations.
In 1981, he won the election as an independent candidate and was elected mayor of Burlington, the largest city in the state of Vermont. After serving as mayor, Sanders was elected as a Vermont Congressman in 1991, again as an independent, and held this position until 2007. In 2006, he was elected Vermont Senator by winning the elections in which he was an independent candidate, and he managed to win the 2012 and 2018 senatorial elections with approximately 70 percent of the votes. Sanders once again managed to enter Congress as a senator in the election on November 8, 2020.
Born in 1941, Sanders, in his 20s, spearheaded the anti-discrimination actions of the Racial Equality Congress. In 1981, during the mayor of Burlington, he implemented the low-cost housing project and contributed to the home ownership of the poor. Known for protecting the poor against the rich, Sanders also opposed US involvement in the Gulf War and the Iraq War. Sanders, who was also criticized in the Democratic Party for his anti-war ideas, nevertheless emphasized his socialist identity by not backing down from his thoughts.
PROMISES: US NON-INTERVENTION IN OTHER COUNTRIES, REDUCING INCOME INSURANCE
Sanders received the greatest support from young people and independents during his candidacy process. With his promises to reduce income inequality, increase the minimum wage, allow immigrants to enter the United States more easily, and that his country would not intervene militarily in other countries, he managed to attract the attention of left parties and politicians, not only in the United States, but all over the world. Sanders, who draws a very different profile from the usual politician profiles in the USA, was one of the Democratic Party's candidates in the election in 2016 when Trump was elected president before 2020, but lost the race in the primary elections.
