Who and when invented the e-scooter?
As technology advances, means of transportation that will make people's daily lives easier are becoming increasingly diverse. One of the vehicles that has become widespread in recent years is the electric scooter. So when do you think the scooter was invented?
Electric scooters; They are vehicles that have an electric motor that gets its energy from rechargeable batteries, move on two wheels, and can be adjusted in direction and speed thanks to the steering wheel, and are used for short-distance journeys.
Before the invention of the electric scooter, children were playing on the streets with vehicles called kick scooters, which had wheels and a wooden body. One of the legs was placed on the vehicle, the other was touched to the ground and the vehicle was pushed.
The First Scooter Made for Adults
The first scooter that adults could use was invented in 1915. The inventor of this scooter, called Autoped, was Arthur Hugo Cecil Gibson. Powered by gasoline, having a 155 cc (155 cm3) engine and 25-centimeter diameter tires, the Autoped could reach a speed of approximately 55 kilometers per hour.
The vehicle, which started to move forward when the driver pushed the steering column forward, could be accelerated with the throttle lever on the left, and by pulling the steering column back, the vehicle braked. Autoped did not take up space thanks to its folding feature. However, these vehicles, which were sold for $ 100 at that time, were thought to be for rich people. Still, some people use it to commute to work or for short distances. It was also preferred by postal officials and traffic police. Production of the Autoped was terminated in 1922 because its sales did not reach the desired level.
Different Scooter Models
In the following years, scooters such as Skootamota, Reynolds Runabout, and Unibus were produced, but these models were more similar to motorcycles. Some of the scooters produced in the first period were difficult to use and uncomfortable for the driver. Over time, these vehicles have become more comfortable with innovations made on the brakes, suspension, and body design of the vehicles.
In the 1990s, non-motorized scooters began to become popular again with the Kickboard brand.
First Electric Scooters
An electric motor was added to these vehicles in the early 2000s. After 2009, with the integration of lithium-ion batteries into scooters, more people started to use these vehicles.
