How was Prada founded: Who are Mario Prada and his brother Martino?

Prada became the official supplier of the Italian Royal House in 1919. Prada was allowed to display the Savoy coat of arms and knotted rope design in its brand logo, making Prada a brand for the Italian aristocracy and upper middle class. Later, as the brand became popular, this logo was removed and only the Prada text remained.

Although Mario Prada did not believe that women should be in business and prevented female family members from entering the company, his daughter Luisa managed the brand for 20 years after him. It was Luisa's daughter, Miuccia Prada, who brought the brand to its current position.

Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli Era in the Company

In the mid-1970s, Miuccia Prada joined the family business. She devoted herself to accessory design. Miuccia started making waterproof backpacks. In 1977, she met Patrizio Bertelli and Bertelli joined the company. Bertelli advised the brand to stop importing British steamer trunks and handbags and replace existing luggage.

Mario Prada (born in Milan; died in 1958) was the founder and original designer of the fashion label Prada, a company specializing in many high fashion goods for men and women, including shoes, handbags, luggage, and leather goods. Prada was founded in 1913.

Miuccia Prada's creativity met with Patrizio Bertelli's entrepreneurship.

This partnership has introduced the fashion world to an innovative business model based on the control of every process and the application of strict criteria throughout the entire production cycle. After a while, they got married. While it is seen as an admirable situation that they carried out both their marriage and business life together for many years, the couple still serves as the CEO of the brand.

Brand Growth

In the 1980s, it expanded its store network by focusing on a new aesthetic perception dominated by a special shade of light green, which would be known as "Prada green". These stores were opened in Milan, New York, Madrid, London, Paris and Tokyo.

A line of shoes was produced in 1984. In 1985, Miuccia launched the “classic Prada handbag.” In 1989, women's ready-made clothing was introduced to the market. In the 1990s, Prada entered the Far East, China, Japan, and the USA markets. In 1993, Prada prepared its first ready-to-wear and shoe collection for men.

In 2000, the first collection of sunglasses and optical frames from Prada Group, Prada, and Miu Miu was launched. Since 2003, the group's glasses have been licensed to the Italian world-leading manufacturer Luxottiva. In 2001, Prada Group acquired control of the Car shoe brand, founded in 1963 and known for its iconic loafers. In 2002, Prada opened its America Center in New York. Prada Group collaborated with cosmetics company Puig for Prada perfumes. The first fragrance for women was released in 2004, and the men's line was released in 2006. In 2005, Scandinavian artists Elmgreen & Dragset created a store-shaped sculpture called "Prada Marfa". This sculptural store is located 37 miles from the city of Marfa in the middle of the Texas desert, USA. In 2006, she moved her Miu Miu collection to Paris after her experiences in New York and London.

The launch of the Prada, the world's first touch-screen mobile phone, with over 1 million units sold in the first 18 months in 2007, was followed by a new version in 2008 and two more updates in 2011.

Prada's Current Management

In an investor presentation in November 2021, Prada CEO Patrizio Bertelli officially crowned his elder son and heir Lorenzo Bertelli as his successor and said he could hand over the brand to him in three to four years. Lorenzo Bertelli, a former rally driver, is currently Prada Group Corporate President and chief marketing officer.
