Aimable Pélissier; (born 16 November 1794, Maromme, France – died 22 May 1864, Algeria) was a French general who played an important role in the conquest of Algeria. He commanded the French army in the last years of the Crimean War.
After studying at military schools, he joined the army in 1815. He fought against the Ottomans in the Peloponnesos in 1828-29. In 1839, he was sent to Algeria to fight against the Emir of Maskura (Muaskar), Abdulkadir Algeria, who rebelled against French rule. In return for his success in Algeria, he was promoted to the rank of general in 1846. He served as interim governor of Algeria in 1852 and played an important role in subjugating the tribes in southern Algeria.
Aimable-Jean-Jacques Pélissier, 1st Duc de Malakoff (6 November 1794 – 22 May 1864), was a Marshal of France. He served in Algeria and elsewhere, and as a general commanded the French forces in the Crimean War.
In January 1855 he was appointed commander of a corps in the Crimea. On August 16, he repelled a Russian attack in the Traktir Mountain range, and on September 8 he captured the Malakhov Fortress and the city of Sevastopol. He became marshal of France four days later and was made Duke of Malakoff in July 1858. He was appointed as the governor of Algeria in 1860 and continued this duty until the end of his life.
