He retired from comics in 2018: Who is Alan Moore?

Alan Moore was born on November 18, 1953, in Northampton, England.

Moore, who started his career drawing cartoons in the British Music magazine Sounds in 1979, eventually focused on writing, thinking that he was not good enough at drawing.

He created various characters for "2000AD", one of England's most famous magazines. He became famous, especially with the "Marvelman" series, and started to win awards.

Moore, who won an award for the Marvelman series two years in a row in 1982 and 1983, settled in the USA for DC's magazine "Swamp Thing" and continued his work there.

Alan Moore (born 18 November 1953) is an English author known primarily for his work in comic books including Watchmen, V for Vendetta, The Ballad of Halo Jones, Swamp Thing, Batman: The Killing Joke, and From Hell. He is widely recognised among his peers and critics as one of the best comic book writers in the English language. Moore has occasionally used such pseudonyms as Curt Vile, Jill de Ray, Brilburn Logue, and Translucia Baboon; also, reprints of some of his work have been credited to The Original Writer when Moore requested that his name be removed.

Moore, who did various works for DC, started the "Watchman" series in 1986. This series, which was far from the comic book concept that existed until then, made a big impact, especially in the USA. In this sophisticated work of fiction, there was a harsh political criticism of society around the concept of the superhero.

Alan Moore uses a style that disrupts the patterns and tools of the genre, breaks them down, and reconstructs them in different contexts, surprising the reader and forcing him to think.

Many of the comics he wrote were made into movies by Hollywood. The main ones are "Watchmen", "From Hell", "V for Vendetta" and "The League".

Alan Moore announced his retirement from the comic book world after completing The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2018. So much so that he even refused to use his name in adaptations. Even though this clear stance costs him millions of dollars, Moore is determined not to give up his principles.

QUESTION: You retired from comics in 2018 after finishing The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, are there any plans for a comeback?

ANSWER: I'm not interested in comics anymore. I don't want anything to do with comics.

I created comics for over 40 years before retiring. When I entered the industry, the biggest appeal of comics was that they were "shabby". It existed for the entertainment of the working class and especially children. The industry has changed and now bears the name “graphic novel.” The price is at a level that the middle class can afford. I have nothing against the middle class, but comics shouldn't be a middle-aged petty-bourgeois hobby. Comic books were created for people who didn't have a lot of money.
