An occultist who deeply believes in the existence of magic: Who is Aleister Crowley?
Aleister Crowley, who was known as the "Most Notorious Man in the World" during his lifetime, is one of the most notorious occultists of modern times.
Aleister Crowley was born in England in 1875 to a religious family. Crowley, who had a rebellious childhood, joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1898. He was later declared a "pervert" and expelled from the society due to his homosexual relations.
Education
Although he is not known for being a successful student, he is a Cambridge graduate. He also received training in many different fields such as psychology, philosophy, poetry, and astrology.
Aleister Crowley, who loved traveling and climbing mountains, climbed the 2nd and 3rd highest mountains in the world in his youth. After his father's death, he fell in love with the art of black magic.
Aleister Crowley (born Edward Alexander Crowley; 12 October 1875 – 1 December 1947) was an English occultist, philosopher, ceremonial magician, poet, painter, novelist and mountaineer. He founded the religion of Thelema, identifying himself as the prophet entrusted with guiding humanity into the Æon of Horus in the early 20th century. A prolific writer, he published widely over the course of his life.
Crowley constantly sought out the most extreme and mysterious magic. In 1900, he wanted to perform the "Ritual of the Arbamel" and thought that he would thus dominate the Twelve Lords of Hell. However, before completing the ritual, he left it unfinished for an unknown reason.
Thelema
In 1904, he traveled to Egypt and performed magical ceremonies at the Great Pyramid of Giza. He declared himself a prophet and gathered crowds around him.
He also developed a religion called "Thelema" and considered himself a member of this religion.
Crowley, who deeply believed in the existence of magic, called magic (by adding a letter "k") to distinguish magic from simple tricks. He claimed that he could turn himself invisible and was attacked by a vampire.
Crowley claimed that an angel was protecting him. He stated that his guardian angel named Aiwass had the famous Book of the Law written in Egypt. This normally misshapen angel, Crowley claims, has protected and watched over Crowley throughout his life.
Aleister Crowley is also a big fan of Ataturk. So much so that he named one of his sons Atatürk, it is said that he wrote the poem "Gone are the Ghosts and Gods" in the name of Ataturk, the founding father of the Republic of Turkey, and his son, in his poetry book "Oriflame" published in 1945.
Crowley, a person who was constantly made fun of throughout his life, must have attracted the attention of the art community because Crowley can also be seen on the cover art of The Beatles' famous album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".
In addition, Jimmy Page, the famous guitarist of the Led Zeppelin band, bought the mansion in Scotland where Crowley once lived for him. It is known that this famous guitarist also owns a collection of Crowley's personal belongings.
Crowley, who loved theatricality very much; argued that costume, setting, drugs, and sex should be at the center of magical rituals.
Countless movies, songs, and books have been written about Crowley, who left his mark on an era with his radical actions and sensational personality.
Crowley's death also left behind a lot of doubt. Crowley, who had been using very high doses of drugs lately, could not stand the pain he was in and asked for morphine from his doctor. However, he died cursing his doctor who refused to give him morphine. After hours, the doctor who refused to give him morphine also died mysteriously.
