UEFA president who will remain in office until 2027: Who is Aleksander Ceferin?
Saying that I am not a showman, I don't make unrealistic promises that I can't keep and I don't have ego, Ceferin has been the UEFA president for 7 years, which he won in 2016.
Aleksander Ceferin was born on October 13, 1967 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. After graduating from the University of Ljubljana with a degree in law in 1991, he mainly represented sports clubs and athletes in his family's law firm. He later took over the management of the company from his father.
In 2005 Ceferin became a member of the executive board of amateur club FC Ljubljana Lawyers. Between 2006 and 2011 he was a member of NK Olimpija Ljubljana.
In 2011 Ceferin was elected President of the Slovenian Football Federation. Between 2011 and 2016, he served as the second and third vice president of the UEFA Legal Affairs Committee.
Aleksander Čeferin (born 13 October 1967) is a Slovenian lawyer and football administrator. Between 2011 and 2016, he was president of the Football Association of Slovenia. Since September 2016, he has been the president of UEFA.
Journalists from Norwegian football magazine Josimar discovered contradictions in his CV that have not yet been clarified. According to Slovenian statutes, there are doubts about whether he was active on the board of a football club for long enough before taking over the presidency of the association. His relationship with the futsal club KMN Svea Lesna Litija was also questioned.
On 14 September 2016, Ceferin was elected the seventh President of UEFA. This automatically made him FIFA Vice President. He received 42 votes at the UEFA Congress in Athens, while his opponent, Dutch Michael van Praag, received 13 votes. He was among others in the election. It is supported by the DFB and former UEFA general secretary and current FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
In April 2017, some reform proposals from Ceferin in the field of good governance were adopted, including the introduction of a time limit for the UEFA presidency and membership of the UEFA Executive Committee. Additionally, Executive Committee candidates since then have had to take a leading role (President, Vice-President, General Secretary, or CEO) in their national association.
Ceferin has also repeatedly spoken in favor of tightening financial fair play measures in force since 2009. On 7 February 2019, he was re-elected to a four-year term as UEFA President.
Slovenian Aleksander Ceferin was re-elected as UEFA President in the voting held at the 47th Ordinary UEFA Congress held in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal.
Ceferin, who entered the voting at the congress as the only candidate, was re-appointed as the UEFA president. Ceferin, who started his third term as UEFA president, will remain in office until 2027.
