Details from Alex Garland's life

Garland's first novel, The Beach (1996), made him famous. Based on his travels in Europe and Thailand, this novel tells the story of a young British traveler who discovers a pristine beach occupied by like-minded travelers. The novel includes references to drug culture, hallucinatory sequences, and unique depictions of utopia. The Beach initially received positive reviews and gained popularity through word-of-mouth response; some critics viewed Garland as an important voice of Generation X. The novel has been translated into 25 different languages and sold approximately 700,000 copies by the beginning of 1999. It was also adapted into a movie of the same name starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

In the following years, Garland stepped into Hollywood as a screenwriter. Alex Garland, who has been praised for his screenplays for the Danny Boyle films 28 Days Later (2002) and Sunshine (2007), as well as Never Let Me Go (2010) and Dredd (2012), wrote the screenplay for the science fiction thriller Ex Machina (2014). He also took over the directorship. The film earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay and won three BAFTAs for Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best British Independent Film.

His second feature-length work was Annihilation (2018), released in 2014 and adapted from Jeff VanderMeer's novel of the same name. In 2022, he again signed the film Adamlar, which can be described as a British thriller, as director and screenwriter. Garland also served as writer, director, and executive producer for the FX miniseries Devs (2020). He last went behind the camera with the movie Civil War (2024), which he also wrote and directed.
