MacGraw was born on April 1, 1939, in New York, USA. Her real name is Elizabeth Alice MacGraw. She is the daughter of an Irish-American father and a Jewish mother. She has a brother. She graduated from Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where she studied on a scholarship. She began to turn into an urban legend with her choice of clothes and the rich hippie image she created when she was a student.

In 1960, she started working as a photography assistant at Harper's Bazaar. At the end of a 6-month period, photographer Melvin Sokolsky, who described Ali MacGraw as very hardworking, hired her as an assistant and they worked together for 6 years.

Elizabeth Alice MacGraw (born April 1, 1939)is an American actress and activist. She gained attention with her role in the film Goodbye, Columbus (1969), for which she won the Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer. She gained an international profile for her role in the romantic drama Love Story (1970), for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. 

During this period, she managed to attract the attention of Chanel with her style and beauty and took part in the promotional campaign of Chanel bathroom products. Thus, she took her first step into modeling, moving from behind the camera to in front of it.

She attracted attention with her film "Goodbye, Columbus" in 1969, but her real fame came in 1970 with the film "Love Story" directed by Arthur Hiller. Although many movies are adapted from novels, this movie is the exact opposite. First, the movie was shot, and then the novel was published. The movie tells the story of two university students and is a true love story.

After meeting Steve McQueen on the set of the movie The Getaway in 1972, she separated from her husband Robert Evans, whom she married in 1969.

MacGraw also described her struggle with alcoholism in her autobiography, "Moving Pictures."

1st marriage: She married banker Robin Martin Hoen on October 24, 1960. They divorced in 1962.

Her second marriage: She married film producer Robert Evans on October 24, 1969. They divorced on June 7, 1973. She has a son named Josh Evans (born January 16, 1971).

3rd marriage: Ali MacGraw married movie actor Steve McQueen on August 31, 1973. She divorced on August 9, 1978.
