Born in 1949, politician, economist, and anthropologist of Pashtun origin.

After completing his primary and secondary education in Kabul, he studied economics and anthropology at the American University of Beirut and Colombia University. He worked with the World Bank before returning to Afghanistan in 2002.

He served as Afghanistan's finance minister between July 2002 and December 2004. He previously served as rector of Kabul University. He worked to strengthen Afghanistan economically after the collapse of the Taliban government.

In a survey conducted by Foreign Policy Magazine in 2013, he ranked second among the world's top 100 intellectuals.

Mohammad Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai (born 19 May 1949) is an Afghan former politician, academic, and economist who served as the president of Afghanistan from September 2014 until August 2021, when his government was overthrown by the Taliban.

Member of the Commission on the Legal Empowerment of the Poor, an independent initiative supported by the UN Development Programme. He was elected President of Afghanistan in the presidential elections held in 2014.

He left Afghanistan with a private helicopter after the Taliban captured the presidential palace in Kabul on August 15, 2021.

He denied the allegations that he left the country with a large amount of money

Ghani denied the claims of the Spokesperson of the Russian Embassy in Kabul, Nikita Ishchenko, that he took a large amount of money with him when he left the country.

Gani evaluated that it was "the Afghan government's own fault" that the negotiations with the Taliban were inconclusive, and added that he wanted to transfer power to the Taliban by peaceful means, but was removed from Afghanistan against his will.
