One of the most successful swimmers in British history: Who is Ben Proud?
Ben Proud is one of the most successful athletes in British swimming history. Proud, along with Cesar Cielo and Florent Manaudou, are among three male swimmers who are world champions in both the short and long courses of the 50-meter freestyle.
Moreover, their success is not limited to this. Last year, he won gold medals in the 50-meter freestyle at championships such as the World Championship, European Championship, and Commonwealth Games.
The 29-year-old swimmer, who has achieved more success in just three months than many athletes achieve throughout their careers, prefers not to be active on social media, unlike his counterpart popular sports figures. He prefers to focus on his own world and work.
Benjamin Proud (born 21 September 1994) is an English competitive swimmer, representing Great Britain at the Olympic Games, the FINA World Aquatics Championships and LEN European Aquatics Championships, and England at the Commonwealth Games. Proud specialises in sprint freestyle and butterfly races, specifically the 50-metre distance in both. He is the 2022 World Champion in the 50 metre freestyle, his second long course world title. He is the 2017 world champion in the 50-metre butterfly. He is only the third male swimmer to be simultaneously short-course and long-course World Champion at 50 metre freestyle, after César Cielo and Florent Manaudou.
There are occasional reports in the British press that Ben Proud will retire after the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris this year. While answering this question, Proud says that he plans to go to Paris, but he does not know what will happen next.
Does the 29-year-old swimmer have any plans after ending his career?
He hasn't started thinking about it yet: “I think what I do as an athlete is try to see how fast I am. “I still love this sport and I can swim for many more years.”
At the moment, Ben Proud just wants to focus on Paris, training, and the team around him because he believes that this is the only way he can achieve the results he wants. According to him, yes, he can take a two-month break from swimming after Paris 2024, but retirement is not on his mind for now.
With the Olympics on the horizon, he doesn't have time to think about it anyway. He has to work now. He has to strive day and night. Just like until now.
