Who is Carlos Slim?

Carlos Slim Helu was born on January 28, 1940, in Mexico City. When his father died in 1952, he left his family a fortune that could be developed. Carlos Slim Helú graduated from UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) as an engineer in 1961.

Before graduating, he taught algebra and linear programming at public lectures and gave lectures at private institutes. He served on economic commissions for Latin America and the Caribbean. Following in his father's footsteps as a mentor, Helú worked in retail and finance. Helú's thesis is this:

“What courage has taught me is that no matter how bad the crises are, Mexico will never disappear, and if I maintain my faith in my country, any investment will definitely return.”

He served as vice president of the Mexican Foreign Exchange and president of the Mexican Association of Chambers of Exchange. Between 1996 and 1998, he served as chairman of the Latin American Committee at the New York Exchange Board of Directors. He left SBC Communications, where he was a member of the management team, in July 2004 to devote more time to the World Education and Development Foundation.

Carlos Slim Helú (born 28 January 1940) is a Mexican business magnate, investor, and philanthropist. From 2010 to 2013, Slim was ranked as the richest person in the world by the Forbes business magazine. He derived his fortune from his extensive holdings in a considerable number of Mexican companies through his conglomerate, Grupo Carso. As of December 2023, Bloomberg Billionaires Index ranked him as the 11th-richest person in the world, with a net worth of $105 billion or about 7% of Mexico's GDP, making him the richest person in Latin America.

He took part in the management staff of Altria Group (formerly Philip Morris) and Alcatel until April 2006. During the 28 years he spent in business circles, he built the important financial-industrial giant Grupo Carso. He also became the director of Telefonos de Mexico, America Movil, and Grupo Financiero Inbursa.

In 1990, under Carlos Salinas, it found ways to reach its current size through privatizations. These included Telmex, which included France Telecom, and Southwestern Bell Company. He has received criticism for his policy of monopolization and consequent elimination of competition in local and vibrant markets. The significant increase in telephone communication fees also supported criticisms of antitrust.

Carlos Slim Helú was awarded the Medal of Honor for Entrepreneurship by Mexican Businessmen. He received the Golden Tray award and was awarded the Commander 2nd Leopold Medal by the Belgian Government.

Carlos Slim Helú, the richest man in Latin America, also ranked 3rd in Forbes Magazine's "Billionaires List" in 2006. In 2010, he became number 1 on the list with a net worth of $60 billion.

Carlos Slim Helu has six children and lives in Mexico City.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, as of December 27, 2016, he ranked 6th among the richest names in the world with a personal wealth of 49.2 billion dollars.
