Chaim Topol, who played the character of Tevye in the movie adaptation of the famous Broadway musical The Fiddler on the Roof in 1971, died on March 8, 2023. Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced the news of his death.
Chaim Topol (September 9, 1935 – March 8, 2023), also spelled Haym Topol, mononymously known as Topol, was an Israeli actor, singer, and illustrator. He is best known for his portrayal of Tevye, the lead role in the stage musical Fiddler on the Roof and the 1971 film adaptation, performing this role more than 3,500 times from 1967 through 2009.
President Herzog stated that Topol, who was born in Tel Aviv, Israel on September 9, 1935, was remembered with respect for his mastery in acting throughout his career, and said, "He was awarded many awards for his talent and creativity, but we won the most important prize with him in dozens of characters he played."
Topol began his acting career in the Nahal entertainment group during his service in the Israeli army and later toured Israel with kibbutz theater and satirical theater troupes. He was also one of the founders of the Haifa Theatre.
Topol appeared in more than 30 films in Israel and the United States, including Galileo (1975), Flash Gordon (1980), and For Your Eyes Only (1981).
He was described as Israel's only internationally recognized player from the 1960s to the 1980s. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Tevye in 1971's The Fiddler on the Roof.
The family of the actor, who died on March 8, 2023, at the age of 87, shared very important information with the press after his death. His family said that Israeli actor Chaim Topol is working with Mossad.
Allegedly, among the agents of the Mossad was actor Chaim Topol, who has lived in London for many years. Although famous for his lead role in Fiddler on the Roof, his family claimed that he managed to work as a secret agent.
Topol's wife Galia and their children talked about the unknown sides of the famous actor in an interview with Haaretz.
Stating that his father participated in the operations on behalf of the Israeli intelligence service Mossad, his son said, "I don't know what the correct definition is for the missions he participated in, but it is a fact that my father participated in secret missions on behalf of the Mossad."
The family said Topol owned a small hidden camera and a reel-shaped tape recorder and often made secret trips abroad.
"What motivated Haim was always curiosity, adventure, and courage," said Topol's wife, Galia.
Explaining that his father bought an apartment in London and moved there after gaining international fame in the 1970s, his son stated that Haim Topol was a part of the Mossad organization in London.
The family said Mossad officer Peter Zvi Malkin was Topol's liaison officer and had sneaked out from the backyard to visit their home.
The family also said that as an international star, Topol was able to travel comfortably to countries where Israel did not have a diplomatic presence, such as China and the Soviet Union, and returned with "sensitive equipment" from many countries.
