His real name is Walter Charles Dance. His father died when he was 4 years old. He graduated from Plymouth University of the Arts. He joined the "Royal Shakespeare Company" theater in London.

He played the villain character in the 1981 movie "For Your Eyes Only", a bond movie by Ian Fleming starring Roger Moore.

In 1992, he played the character of Clemens in the movie "Creature 3", directed by David Fincher and starring Sigourney Weaver.
