His real name is Christopher Whitelaw Pine, he was born on August 26, 1980 in Los Angeles, California. He was born to Robert Pine, whose his father was an actor, and to Gwynne Gilford, a former actress, whose his mother was a psychotherapist. Pine has an older sister, Katherine, who is also an actress, and his maternal grandmother is Anne Gwynne, a Hollywood actress.

Educated at Oakwood School, Pine later graduated from the University of California with a bachelor degree in 2002. Wanting to find "a place where he belongs" while in college, Pine was not interested in joining any association and decided to do theater instead. Pine played Orestes and Shakespeare in a play by playwright Caryl Churchill at La Val's Subterranean Theatre, and at Zellerbach Hall. After graduating from college, Pine trained at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco while attending the Williamstown Theater Festival.
