History's first professional industrial designer: Who is Christopher Dresser?

Born in the UK in 1834, Dresser was one of the most innovative and creative designers of his time. He studied at university on botany. He became a professor of botany and published many books. He died in France in 1904. By using his deep botanical knowledge in his designs, he brought a completely different aesthetic understanding to items such as fabrics and carpets. Patterns from wallpapers to ceramics have been used in many areas. Silver-plated items occupy an important place in his special designs. He was invited to design the USA and Japan. Tiffany is among the big brands he has worked with.

Christopher Dresser (4 July 1834 – 24 November 1904) was a British designer and design theorist, now widely known as one of the first and most important independent designers. He was a pivotal figure in the Aesthetic Movement and a major contributor to the allied Anglo-Japanese or Modern Style (British Art Nouveau style), both of which originated in England and had long-lasting international influence.

Dresser has been very successful in several areas of design. The first of these is kitchen utensils. The items he usually designs as silver-plated have shapes that are wonders of geometry. Teapots are very famous. Although he used round lines, he shaped many teapots in forms consisting of right angles. Again, on the handle parts, no circular but rectangular forms were used. Sugar bowl, napkin holder, and pot designs are all more interesting than the other. Another area where it excels is the pattern.

Even today, patterns inspired by nature are used in furniture fabrics, carpets, ceramics, and wallpapers. Being a botanist has a great influence on this. As a working principle, he would first draw plants and measure them mathematically. It is possible to see the unique proportions of nature in the wallpapers he designed with repetitive motifs. He also has a unique understanding of color harmony. He would choose the color of the upper motif and the lower ground from colors that would complement and support each other.

He took care to reflect the finest details and beauties of nature in ceramic items such as cups, vases, and trays. It has not only included white as the background, but also the harmony of color mixtures as in nature. His admiration for nature has been the biggest inspiration for his creativity.
