Creator of the Pink Panther: Who is Friz Freleng?

Famous American cartoonist and animator Friz Freleng, whose real name is Isadore Freleng and the creator of characters such as the Pink Panther and Bugs Bunny, was born on August 21, 1905, in Kansas City, USA.

Isadore Freleng started his career at the studio United Film Ad Service in his hometown, Kansas. Here he met Hugh Harman and Ub Iwerks, who would have an important place in his later life. The person who gave Isadore Freleng the nickname 'Frizby' or simply 'Friz' is none other than Harman, whom he met here.

Isadore "Friz" Freleng (August 21, 1905 – May 26, 1995), credited as I. Freleng early in his career, was an American animator, cartoonist, director, producer, and composer known for his work at Warner Bros. Cartoons on the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of cartoons from the 1930s to the early 1960s. In total he created more than 300 cartoons.

When Walt Disney, Iwerks' friend, moved to Hollywood in 1923, he invited Iwerks and his colleagues there. So Friz Freleng moved to California in 1927 and started working at Disney Studios. After Freleng worked there for a while, they intended to establish their own studio together with Hugh Harman, whom he knew from Kansas, and Rudolph Ising, whom he met at Disney and created the character of Bosko. Bosko, a character similar to Mickey Mouse, did not receive enough attention.

After trying for a while, the team managed to sell Bosko to Leon Schlesinger, who also allowed them to work and produce the Looney Toons series for Warner Bros. Thus began Freleng's career at Warner Bros., where he would achieve great success.

When Harman and Ising left Schlesinger's studio in 1933, Freleng became the director of the studio despite his young age. The Porky Pig character they created in 1935 was very successful. With Schlesinger giving the creators free rein, very strong characters were created at Warner Bros., despite Disney's technological superiority at that time. Freleng and the studio introduced Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam in 1945, Tweety and Sylvester in 1947, and Speedy Gonzales in 1955. With these achievements, Freleng has become one of the most respected people in his sector. During his time at Warner Bros., Freleng was nominated for an Oscar eight times and won an Oscar four times.

Although Freleng, who started working with Warner Bros again after a short separation between 1962 and 64, was not as creative as in his first period, the Pink Panther character he created during this period became a phenomenon all over the world. In the late stages of his career, he created Frito-Lay's Chester Cheetah character, which we all know from advertisements.

Freleng, who left his job at Warner Bros. at a rather late age in 1986, passed away on May 26, 1995, at the age of 90. Some companies and people are identified with each other, as in the case of Apple and Steve Jobs. A similar relationship existed between Warner Bros. animated films and Freleng. Freleng's signature and influence were seen in all the animated products produced by Warner Bros. during this period. In fact, when you examine carefully, you can see 'Friz' products, the 'Hotel Friz' sign, or the 'Freleng Help Center' clinic that Sylvester goes to in Warner Bros movies.
