He started his professional football career at Crystal Palace in 1988. Southgate, who won the Division One championship in the 1993-94 season, was transferred to Aston Villa in 1995. He left the club, where he won the League Cup and UEFA Intertoto Cup, in 2001 and signed with Middlesbrough. He also won a League Cup championship here. He ended his football career in 2006.

Southgate, who played a total of 57 matches for England and scored two goals, represented his country in the 1996 and 2000 European Football Championships and the 1998 and 2002 World Cups.

Shortly after retiring from football, he was appointed Middlesbrough manager. He left the club in 2009 after working here for 3 seasons. He served as England manager from 2016 to 2024.
