He is the founder of Western historiography: Who is Herodotus?

Greek historian. He was born in Bodrum (Halikarnas) in BC 484. He had to immigrate to Samos because of the conflict with Ligdamisle, the Tyrant of Halicarnassus, whose family was attached to the Persians. Herodotus went on long journeys after that. He traveled through Eastern Anatolia to Egypt and Iran. He traveled all over Greece, Libya, and the Greek cities of Southern Italy. He settled in Athens (towards 445 BC), which he accepted as his second homeland in terms of ideas. Here he became friends with Pericles' entourage, and especially with Sophocles. He migrated to Thurioi in 443 BC and returned to Athens after 439 BC.

Herodotus (c. 484 – c. 425 BC) was a Greek historian and geographer from the Greek city of Halicarnassus, part of the Persian Empire (now Bodrum, Turkey) and a later citizen of Thurii in modern Calabria (Italy). He is known for having written the Histories – a detailed account of the Greco-Persian Wars. Herodotus was the first writer to perform systematic investigation of historical events. He is referred to as "The Father of History", a title conferred on him by the ancient Roman orator Cicero.

The most important work of Herodotus is History, which consists of nine chapters, written in the Ionic dialect. In the book, after a mythological preface, he tells the events related to the Lydian State, the establishment of the Persian Empire and the wars of conquest, and the famous Greco-Persian wars. The main source of the material he used to write his works is his travels. There is no unifying worldview in the history of Herodotus, who was not considered very successful in explaining strategic and tactical issues as well as in economic and political issues. The main subject of the work is the struggles between the Greeks and Asians until the Battle of Mykale in 476. The most interesting part of the work is the depiction of the Persian Wars. It is also possible to find the characteristics of the countries and nations of that time in the work.

The most important feature of Herodotus, who is accepted as the founder of Western historiography, is that he gives his book an air of epic in prose. Herodotus' History has been translated into almost all languages.

Herodotus, who has famous stories such as Arione and Yunus, Polycrates' Ring, and Amazons, dates back to BC. He died towards 425.
