Ian Lancaster Fleming was born on May 28, 1908, in Mayfair, London. His father, Valentine Fleming, was a member of parliament, and his mother, Evelyn St. Croix Rose was a housewife devoted to her family. Ian Fleming, the second-born child of a family of four children, also had a half-sister. Famous actor Christopher Lee was also Fleming's half-cousin.

Fleming started his education at Durnford School on the Isle of Purbeck, and later went to Sunningdale School, Eton College, and Sandhurst, respectively.
