A Grunge legend - Pearl Jam: Who are they, how and when was it formed?
In the late '80s and early '90s, music was rocking in Seattle. Grunge music was taking the city by storm.
One of the most popular bands of the period and the city was Mother Love Bone. Andy Wood, Jeff Ament (Bass), and Stone Gossard (Guitar), a frontman with stage energy, charisma, and appearance, were members of this group. The group, which also managed to record a studio album after their bar concerts, broke up after a very tragic event.
Their lead singer, Andy Wood, fell into a coma due to a drug overdose. When he was taken to the hospital, there was nothing left to do and he was kept alive on life support. With the death of Andy Wood, the group disbanded.
After this incident, they did not give up on music, although they could not quickly recover themselves at the point of their music career. One day, while Stone Gossard and Mike McCready were playing guitar, McCready offered to form a band. And Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, and Jeff Ament recorded demo songs with and without lyrics. Their aim was to find a soloist for themselves. They started sending these demos to people through musicians they knew.
At the same time, Eddie Vedder, who was working in a security job in San Diego, received a package one day and listened to these demos. Afterward, he wrote the lyrics for these demos and recorded and sent over the demos with his own lyrics and vocals. He records; They entered our lives as Footsteps and Alive songs. Mike McCready, who heard Eddie Vedder for the first time in those demos, describes what went through his mind at that moment:
"The sound on the recording blew my mind. Who is it? Is this a real person?"
The whole team was eager to work with Eddie, and they hurriedly got him to Seattle and got into the studio in no time to record Ten.
The story of the group
Pearl Jam, one of the greatest rock bands of all time, was founded in 1990 in the Seattle area of Washington state by Stone Gossard, Eddie Vedder, Mike McCready, and Jeff Ament. Eddie Vedder on vocals, Stone Gossard on rhythm guitar, Jeff Ament on bass and Mike McCready on the lead guitar made Pearl Jam go down in history as the best rock band of the time.
Matt Cameron, who was the drummer of Soundgarden, joined Pearl Jam in 1998. Although Dave Krusen joined the group in 1990, he was removed from the group in 1991 when his chemistry did not match. Matt Chamberlain joined the band in 1991 and was removed the same year. Likewise, Dave Abbruzzese joined the group in 1991 but left in 1994. Jack Irons entered in 1994 and was removed in 1998. While no drummer could hold on to the group, Matt Cameron came in 1998 and has remained as the indispensable drummer of the group until today.
In 1991, he shared his first album, Ten, with his fans. Pearl Jam, which has gone down in history as the most important band of the grunge movement since 1990, performed an action that no other music group could do. While the clip and the interview were famous at that time, Pearl Jam did not shoot any video or interview like the Ticketmaster protest. Accordingly, Pearl Jam, which is against the music market, has sold more than 32 million albums in the United States and more than 60 million albums worldwide. It sold more than any alternative rock band in the early 1990s and was one of the most talked about bands of that time.
While his music style and influences have continued since the 1990s, it has been the best among groups that make music in the grunge style. Pearl Jam, which has made music in many categories such as Classic Rock, Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, and Punk, has achieved success with each album sale. The group has not hired or lost any employees since 1998. It still includes Jeff Ament, Eddie Vedder, Matt Cameron, Stone Gossard, and Mike McCready. Pearl Jam, which has entered the Billboard chart many times, continues to tour, concert, and live performances with its undisbanded group.
