James, who was brought up in a military family, was born in a military hospital in Hampshire, started boarding school at the age of seven, received his pilot's badge at 16, studied for a short time at Bristol University, and then joined the army at his father's insistence. He became first lieutenant and became the first British officer to enter Kosovo-Pristina.

James Blunt grew up in a musicless home, and the only CD player in his house was in his car.

When he went away to school, he learned piano and performed in the school musical. From then on, he listened and learned as much as he could. At the age of 14, James received a friend's guitar and wrote his first song soon after.
