John Joseph Travolta was born on February 18, 1954, in Englewood, New Jersey, USA. The youngest child of a family of six children, Travolta's father was Salvatore Travolta, a semi-professional football player, and his mother was Helen Cecilia, a local actress and voice artist. Travolta, who is Italian on his father's side and Irish on his mother's side, grew up in a neighborhood where Irish Americans lived heavily.
Travolta, who moved to New York after graduating from Dwight Morrow High School, took the stage by performing in the Broadway musical Over Here. Travolta, who first appeared as an extra in the movie Emergency in 1972, became known with the horror movie Carrie, shot in 1976, and the TV series Welcome Back, Kotter, which was shown between 1975 and 1979.

Travolta, who joined the music world in 1969 with three singles called You Set My Dreams To Music, Goodnight Mr Moon, and Rainbows, first appeared in the soundtrack of the musical Over Here. The artist, who entered the US music charts at number 39 with his album John Travolta, released in 1976, took part in a total of 10 albums between 1974 and 2007, four of which managed to enter the US Top 200 list.
The musicals Saturday Night Fever, in which he starred in 1977, and Grease, released a year later, made Travolta's name known around the world. The successful actor, who was nominated for an Oscar for Saturday Night Fever, became the 4th youngest nominee in the history of these awards. Travolta, who also sang some of the songs in the soundtrack of Grease, did not break this tradition and sang most of the songs in the movie Urban Cowboy, which was released in 1980.

Travolta starred in many successful films in the late 90s and 2000s, including Face/Off, The Thin Red Line, Swordfish, and Be Cool'n. The successful actor, who returned to musicals with the 2007 movie Hairspray, was once again nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in this movie. Travolta last starred in From Paris with Love, which was released in 2010.
Travolta, who married his wife Kelly Preston, also an actress, in 1991, had two children, Jett and Ella. Jett Travolta passed away in 2009 due to the effects of Kawasaki Syndrome, which is seen in young children.
