The engineer who designed an airplane in his dream: Who is John W. Dunne?

Dreams have been considered a mysterious phenomenon worth solving for people for centuries and have been the subject of research in many areas of expertise. The study conducted by Englishman John W. Dunne on this subject is quite different from other studies.

The engineer who designed an airplane in his dream: Who is John W. Dunne?

John W. Dunne was working as an aeronautical engineer in the British Army in 1901. Dunne is the engineer who designed the first military aircraft in England. Dunne states that he realized this design in his dream. Dunne was also studying dreams. In his work titled "An Experiment with Time", published in 1928, he wrote about his studies in the field of seeing the future. Dunne states that it all started when he pondered some interesting dreams he had. In Dunne's dream, the clock stops at 04.30. He gets into an argument with the receptionist about whether the clock stops at 04.30 at night or 16.30 during the day.

John William Dunne (2 December 1875 – 24 August 1949) was a British soldier, aeronautical engineer and philosopher. As a young man he fought in the Second Boer War, before becoming a pioneering aeroplane designer in the early years of the 20th century. Dunne worked on automatically stable aircraft, many of which were of tailless swept wing design, to achieve the first aircraft demonstrated to be stable. He later developed a new approach to dry fly fishing before turning to speculative philosophy, where he achieved some prominence and literary influence through his "serialism" theory on the nature of time and consciousness, first set out in his book An Experiment with Time.

When he wakes up, he realizes that the clock has indeed stopped at 04.30. Although he does not attach much importance to this dream, he begins to see some events in his dreams before they happen. In one of his dreams, Dunne sees himself on the slopes of a volcano that is about to erupt. He wakes up trying to persuade the authorities to evacuate the 4 thousand people on the island as soon as possible. In the following days, he read the news in the newspaper that more than 40 thousand people died in a volcano that erupted on an island. The news states that there is a possibility that these people can be evacuated before the explosion! Dunne was in a deserted place in Africa when he had this dream, but his dream coincided with reality...

In another dream, Dunne was walking on a road between two fields surrounded by high iron fences. A horse in one of the fields suddenly starts neighing and stamping. Glancing at the railing, Dunne thinks the horse cannot jump over it. But a few minutes later he sees the horny horse coming after him...

Dunne goes fishing with his brother the next day. While he was on the road, his brother called out: "Look at that horse." Looking in the direction his brother pointed, Dunne realizes that the horse he saw in his dream is standing in the same place. The horse behind the high fence is stamping and neighing just like in his dream. The horse jumps over the fence and starts running towards them. The two brothers barely escape with their lives. What makes Dunne uneasy is not the attack of the horse, but the realization of his dream... Dunne sets out to investigate whether the dreams he sees are related to real life. According to him, a significant part of dreams consists of images of different events from the past and present. Dreams, which sometimes provide a preview of future events, actually enable people to observe in a time dimension different from the present.

According to Dunne, since our attention is focused on the 'present moment' while we are awake, we cannot see things that are outside the present moment. Since time is in pieces in the dormant cognitive state, we can experience beyond the present, that is, predictions about the past and future. Dunne, who thinks that the physical brain of human beings has a mind level suitable for the present dimension, says that dreams are seen in a higher time dimension and that a separate mind level is needed in this period. He adds that in the dream world, people only experience observer consciousness. According to Dunne, although people can only observe 'some time particles' belonging to the past, present, or future in their dreams, they forget most of them after waking up.
