The Frenchman who made Captain Cousteau respect Islam: Who is Maurice Bucaille?

Captain Cousteau; While examining the Mediterranean Sea, he determined that it had its unique temperature, salinity, and density, while examining the Atlantic Ocean, he determined that the temperature, salinity, and density were different.

His close friend Prof. Dr. Maurice Bucaille; could not hide his admiration for Islam when he read verses 19-20 of Surah Rahman in the Qur'an to Captain Cousteau.

Maurice Bucaille (19 July 1920 – 17 February 1998) was a French doctor and a specialist in the field of gastroenterology who was appointed as the family physician of Faisal of Saudi Arabia in 1973. His patients included the members of the family of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.

In verses 19-20 of Surah Rahman; “God has released two seas to each other. They get together, but there is an obstacle between the two of them, one does not interfere with the other."

So who is Maurice Bucaille?

Maurice was born in 1920 in France. He completed his education as a medical doctor. Later, he was the Head of the Surgery Clinic at the Paris Faculty of Medicine. He became known as a good Christian and a famous surgeon.

While he was known in this way and continued his studies, he met King Faisal of Saudi Arabia due to his illness. This meeting marked the beginning of great changes in his life.

King Faisal of Saudi Arabia presented the Qur'an to Maurice, the doctor who treated him. In a short time, a warm friendship and fellowship arose between the king, who was Aydın, knowledgeable and had good knowledge of the language, and his famous doctor. Receiving the gift of a very important person, the doctor gave it a special value and began to read the Qur'an. During this reading, he saw that there was important information about various branches of science. Knowing that the Qur'an was revealed fourteen centuries ago, he continued his studies by approaching the information in question more carefully.

Continuing his studies on the Qur'an, the doctor was even more shocked when he saw that the scientific expressions in the Book overlapped with the scientific findings of the time. He hesitated for a moment in accepting the information in question as they were in the interpretations of the Qur'an. If the scientific information contained in the Qur'an was correct, this book could not have been human speech. However, it could have been a divine work. He began to think about whether the information contained in the tafsir was really in the Qur'an. Considering that the information in the tafsir in question could be misleading, he started learning Arabic. As a result of his studies on the Arabic language, he acquired a good knowledge of the language and learned the Arabic of the Qur'an.

Maurice learned as a result of his work that the scientific data in the tafsir are really in the Qur'an and that many verses contain scientific information. Despite the passage of centuries and tremendous technological developments, he determined that the information in the Qur'an and today's scientific discoveries are in harmony. As a result of these studies, he believed that the Qur'an was sent by Allah. Later, he wrote his famous work called "Torah, Bibles, Qur'an and Science", which has been published and translated many times until today. The famous doctor, who was a Muslim, rendered great services to the new religion, Islam.
