He will do the photography for the 2024 Pirelli Calendar: Who is Prince Gyasi?
The Ghanaian artist, who draws attention with his colorful universe and stylized photographs, will bring together Pirelli's passion for innovation with his own bold frames in the Pirelli Calendar.
Pirelli announced that the young Ghanaian artist Prince Gyasi will be behind the shutter in the new issue of its legendary calendar. The 50th edition of the Pirelli Calendar, which is eagerly awaited all over the world every year, the 2024 Pirelli Calendar, will be introduced in November 2023.
This year, the shooting of the Pirelli Calendar, which has become an iconic cultural heritage since 1964, is undertaken by Gyasi, who started taking his first photographs with an old iPhone when he was only 16 years old, and whose works present the audience with a discourse that contradicts the dominant perceptions of "Africa" in the Western world.
Gyasi breaks the rules of artistic photography and invites the viewer to a colorful universe where they are influenced by their own synesthesia experiences. For Gyasi, who experiences neurological synesthesia, which causes him to associate colors with words, sea blue, for example, represents Wednesdays.
Prince Gyasi Nyantakyi (born 30 April 1995) also known by the artist name Prince Gyasi is a Ghanaian international visual artist. He is the co-founder of Boxedkids, a non-profit organization helping kids from Accra get an education.
The artist, who sarcastically rejects the destructive facts about the secondary status of photography within the fine arts with his striking photographs that are perceived as paintings when viewed from afar, generally uses street children around his home in the Jamestown area as subjects. The young photographer also provides an educational platform and creative space to poor children in the Jamestown area with the non-governmental organization he founded, Boxed Kids.
Prince Gyasi, who currently lives in Accra, Ghana, captures the vivid details of the experience of being a Black person, reflecting the elegance and energy of a new generation while challenging traditional beauty standards.
Pirelli, who entrusted the 2024 Pirelli Calendar to Gyasi, invites everyone to always be sensitive to the language of photography and its evolution with the following words: “In the frames of the young artist Prince Gyasi, a new language that appeals to new generations and conveys positive energy and strong messages We see. “Gyasi takes us on a journey towards the colors in a world with unique features, with his photographs reflecting a unique aesthetic.”
Famous photographer Gyasi expresses his excitement about this collaboration with the following words: “I am honored that Pirelli offers the 50th edition of the Calendar as a canvas for me to express my thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Being the first African and Black photographer to shoot the 2024 Pirelli Calendar gives me the chance to highlight some of the people who have been my inspiration over the years, since my childhood. Since I care about representation and culture very much, I decided to take part in the project in my country, Ghana, for the first time in the history of the Calendar.”
His works are included in many of the world's leading contemporary art collections, including Jean Pigozzi's and the Pinault Foundation. His most recent exhibitions include a solo exhibition at the 2022 edition of the Kyotographie Photography Festival in Kyoto (Japan) and the Museo de Arte do Rio de Janeiro (Brazil, 2022). and group exhibitions within the scope of the Pole of Contemporary Art of Cannes (2022). The young photographer, who has been a speaker at Oxford University and the 2019 Skoll World Forum, has also signed important collaborations with brands and magazines such as Apple, Converse, Balmain, Off-White, Vanity Fair, and GQ US.
