The pistols that still remain the most famous are his invention: Who is Samuel Colt?
Colt is sometimes cited as the inventor of the REVOLVER, but in reality, such weapons were made many years before that. His most important contribution was his development of the mass production-based design of the mass gun.
The history of the Colt gun company dates back to 1836. The Colt pistol has provided and continues to provide, extremely high-quality firearms for the United States military throughout history.
He was born on July 19, 1814, in Hartford USA. Colt's father was a businessman; He was engaged in silk weaving in Ware (Massachusetts).
Samuel Colt, who had been brought up to be more or less familiar with firearms, had an aptitude for science and was fascinated by the mechanization of silk textile production.
He demonstrated his talent in this regard for the first time by blowing up a raft on nearby Ware Lake. In Calcutta, Colt saw a revolver made by Elisha Collier. Its mechanism was primitive and inadequate. When he returned to the ship, he built a wooden gun that worked better than Collier's, looking at the ratchet and gear mechanism for pulling the anchor up.
Samuel Colt (July 19, 1814 – January 10, 1862) was an American inventor, industrialist, and businessman who established Colt's Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company (now Colt's Manufacturing Company) and made the mass production of revolvers commercially viable.
When he returned home, he started making pistols, with the support of his father. To earn the money for this job, he organized a traveling show and demonstrated the effects of laughing gas.
He had completed his revolver design in 1835. He received a patent first in England and Europe, and the following year in the USA. In Patterson (New Jersey), he founded the Patterson Arms Manufacturing Company and began producing 36-caliber.
Colt had hoped to mass produce this weapon, but he could not find enough support for the necessary investment for the machine. Weapons made by hand were expensive and only a limited number of orders could be taken, so the company went bankrupt in 1842.
Colt later worked in underwater MINES for the government. He developed the first successful underwater cables used for firing in these mines. However, despite the successful experiments, the government did not pay the necessary attention. In 1843, he established the first underwater TELEGRAPH connection between New York and Coney Island.
Meanwhile, the Mexican war had begun. In 1847, the Texas army, who liked the rapid-fire capability of Colt pistols, ordered 1,000 of them. Since the first production vehicles had been sold, Colt had to rent Eli Whitney's gun company and develop his new design there.
When the order was completed, he founded the Colt Patent Arms Company in Hartford, Connecticut, and began mass production with his old friend Elisha Root.
Colt is sometimes cited as the inventor of the REVOLVER, but in reality, such weapons were made many years before that. His most important contribution was his development of the mass production-based design of the mass gun.
In this field, the contribution of Elisha Root, an engineer, is very important. Root designed an unprecedented number of machine tools and equipment. Together, the two friends introduced the basic principle of mass production, that is, the production of interchangeable parts. Since the US industry was developing rapidly and there were not enough workers, new machines were put into practice immediately.
When his pistols attracted worldwide attention, Colt founded a larger company that made him rich and continues to exist in the same location today. He died in the Civil War when his factory was working harder than ever; But their weapons remained important, especially the .45 caliber cocking revolver produced for the army and nicknamed the Peacemaker.
He died on January 10, 1862.
