Who is the person who managed to get calls from three major internet companies with the CV he wrote?
Sahil Gaba was about to graduate with a master's degree in mechanical engineering when he fell under the spell of computer science. And see how one CV changed his life:
When he realized that his friends who had transferred to the computer science department could find jobs relatively easily, he decided to try his luck. "I spent three to four months learning programming," Gaba, who grew up in India, told Business Insider.
“I was quite optimistic at the beginning, I tried hard, but I couldn't get into any of those 'Big Tech' companies.”
After receiving hundreds of rejections, Sahil Gaba got a great chance and started working at Amazon.
He eventually found a software engineering job at a small fintech company in Chicago. However, while working at this company, he realized that he could not master the most up-to-date software skills.
“I really wanted to work for big technology companies,” says Gaba. So he spent his evenings learning newer technologies and improving his interviewing skills. He also saw the reward of this.
After two years at the company in Chicago and hundreds of rejections, he found his first job that helped him achieve his Big Tech dream: a software engineering position at Amazon.
Resume that brings job offers from three technology giants
The CV that brought Gaba a job offer from three technology giants, Meta, Uber and Google, was the subject of Business Insider news.
Within 18 months of starting at Amazon (within a few weeks of each other), Meta received offers from Uber and Google. And he started at Google with a starting salary of about $300,000 a year. He was 29 years old at the time.
Sahil Gaba's resume from 2021, which earned him job offers from Meta, Uber and Google.
Gaba currently works as a software engineer in Google's Seattle office. However, he says he would make a few changes to his CV today.
So what would it change?
Start with experiences, not skills: Gaba says he prepared this resume before taking the job at Amazon. “I put my skills at the top because my work experience was not that strong at that time. However, it would be more logical to start with work experience. “It is still necessary to add skills, but only for keywords,” he says.
Focus on the new: Gaba says now he would lessen the emphasis on college achievements. “Achievements and awards are very old. If you haven't bought anything recently, I think you can skip these. Similar logic also applies to sections such as 'courses'.
