America's most philanthropic family: Who is the Pritzker family?
This Jewish family, who immigrated from Ukraine and came to the United States, moved from Kiev to Chicago in 1881. Pritzker owns Hayat Corporation, a company that sells hotels, tours, and tourism services. Today, the company has a total of 777 hotels in 54 countries.
The Pritzker family has an architecture award in their name, and they recently opened an architecture school in Chicago. In fact, this family is the family that directs the appearance of Chicago.
Details of the story
The Pritzker family is a prominent American family in business and philanthropy in the late 20th century.
The fate of the family began with Abram Nicholas Pritzker (January 6, 1896, Chicago, Illinois, USA - February 8, 1986, Chicago), the son of a Ukrainian Jewish immigrant, who came to Chicago from Kyiv in 1881. After graduating from Harvard University with a law degree in 1920, Abram Nicholas began working at his father's law firm (later Pritzker & Pritzker).
He and his brother, Jack Nicholas Pritzker (January 6, 1904, Chicago - October 30, 1979, Chicago), left the firm in 1936 to try their luck in business.
The family fortune grew rapidly and they managed to protect their profits from heavy taxes by investing the money in a series of trusts.
Today, the Pritzker family is considered one of the 25 richest families in the world. The family's fortune is estimated at $35.3 billion.
Often referred to as the "Nobel in Architecture" and "the profession's highest honor", the Pritzker Architecture Prize has been awarded to 44 architects since 1979.
The aim of the award is: "To honor a living architect or architects whose built work meets the qualifications of talent, vision, and commitment by making consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture". Believing that a meaningful award would further stimulate public awareness of buildings and inspire the architectural profession, Cindy Pritzker presented the first award in 1979.
The prize, which consists of $100,000 and a bronze medal, is announced each year in May. Presentation ceremonies take place at different locations around the world each year, paying homage to the architecture of other eras and/or the works of previous laureates of the award.
