The Hungarian uprising was a turning point in his life: Who is Tibor Dery?

He was born on October 17, 1894, in Budapest. He was the son of a wealthy manufacturer. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics. During his father's work, he had the opportunity to get to know the workers' life closely. He made a name for himself when his first story, "Lia", was published in the journal Nyugat in 1917. He joined the Hungarian Communist Party in 1919. After the party was dissolved, he fled to France. He traveled to Western countries for many years. When he returned to his country, he was imprisoned by the Horthy government (1920-1944). It regained importance with the end of the Second World War and the fall of the Horthy government. He received the Kossuth Prize in 1948. Beginning in 1952, he distanced himself from the Communist Party. He was imprisoned in 1957 for supporting the 1956 Hungarian Uprising and opposing the government. He continued writing after his release in 1960.

Tibor Déry (18 October 1894 in Budapest – 18 August 1977 in Budapest) was a Hungarian writer and poet. He also wrote under the names Tibor Dániel and Pál Verdes. György Lukács praised Dery as being "the greatest depicter of human beings of our time".

Tibor Dery wrote mostly surrealistic and expressionist prose and poetry during his years abroad. In the novels and stories he wrote in the following years, he reflected on the lives of workers and the struggles of communists who resisted German fascism. His novel Befejezetlen mondat ("Unfinished Sentence") deals with the story of a young communist, while his novel Felelet ("The Answer") deals with the development of a young worker and the efforts of the 1930s generation Hungarian intellectuals in a realistic style with a psychological depth. His novel Niki, published in 1958, was translated into many languages and became one of the best-selling books in Western countries, bringing Dery international fame.

Dery, who deals with his subjects in an emotional and affectionate tone, but with a style that is careful to stick to the facts, took a stand against Socialist Realism in the 1950s.
