He was an architect and furniture designer: who was Charles Rennie Mackintosh?

Charles Rennie Mackintosh is a famous architect and furniture designer who was born on June 7, 1868, in Glasgow and created a trend thanks to his inventions, designs, and new ideas. The Scottish architect, who became very famous in his later years thanks to his interest in art and architecture from a young age, is one of the first foundations of modernism.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (7 June 1868 – 10 December 1928) was a Scottish architect, designer, water colourist and artist. His artistic approach had much in common with European Symbolism. His work, alongside that of his wife Margaret Macdonald, was influential on European design movements such as Art Nouveau and Secessionism and praised by great modernists such as Josef Hoffmann. Mackintosh was born in Glasgow and died in London. He is among the most important figures of Modern Style (British Art Nouveau style).

It brought a different perspective to 20th-century Scottish architecture and became the epitome of elegance. They became a magnificent quartet with Margaret Macdonald, Frances Macdonald, and Herbert Mcnair, who are very close to him in style and have a similar design understanding, and started to create unique works in many fields. Due to the similarity of their surnames, they took the name "the four Macs". Sometime later, Mackintosh married Margaret Macdonalds.

The first work that Charles Rennie Mackintosh brought to the world was the tower of the Glasgow Herald building, and it is clearly seen that he left the traditions aside and created a brand new design style in this design. This work has made a name for itself thanks to its originality and is still among the best architectural works. The most important designs of the Mackintosh couple are the interior furniture and lighting of the houses on Mains Street in Scotland. These designs have become legendary and have successfully written their names in design history. Some of Mackintosh's other masterpieces of design; are Willow Tearooms, House for an art lover, the lighthouse in Glasgow, and Scotland street school museum.

The high-back chair design is also one of the important designs that left its mark on the period. He tried to design the interior design of almost all of the buildings whose exteriors he designed, including their furniture, and created structures that work in harmony and where everything is considered for the peace and comfort of people. In this way, he organized a music hall for Fritz Warndorfer. In his designs, he examined the environmental conditions in detail and built buildings suitable for them, and thanks to this, very useful structures have emerged today. He continued to produce unique works until his death on December 10, 1928.
